Food For The Poor

Food For The Poor

For 25 years, Food for the Poor has been providing food, housing, health care, education, water projects, micro-enterprise development assistance and emergency relief to the poorest of the poor. At ALC we strongly support Food for the Poor and look for opportunities to assist them in their mission. In addition to the thousands of dollars contributed by people in our congregation every year, we also support them in the following ways:

Faithful Recycling Reaches the Needy: Atascocita Lutheran Church has so far raised $725.05 for feeding hungry children through Food for the Poor. We have done this simply by bringing used printer and toner cartridges to the church for recycling. The average inkjet cartridge is worth $1.00 and feeds a hungry child rice and beans for 13 days in Haiti. Toner cartridges are worth even more. Recycling cartridges also has the benefit of keeping metals and plastics out of our landfills. Keep bringing your printer and toner cartridges to the church with a joyful heart, and leave them in the basket in the Narthex that is labeled “Food for the Poor”. Many will be blessed!

Our Vacation Bible School Students raised almost $400 through their daily offerings this summer for Food for the Poor, which will help children buy food and school supplies. We found out that our money goes a long way in other countries- for example: $2.25 can feed a hungry child for over one month in Latin America, and $1.25 can buy a family in the Caribbean a chicken that can provide fresh eggs (a wonderful source of protein). It takes just $1.66 to buy a child school supplies for one month. Our VBS students also learned more about the children they were helping (they are just like them in many ways) and how important it is to share with others.

Hinderlie FamilyOur Missionaries:

The Hinderlies in East Africa: The Hinderies are ELCA missionaries serving in East Africa. ALC continues to be a sponsoring congregation in support of their work by committing a minimum of $1,500 annually to their salary and housing needs. We join together with other sponsoring congregations to make their work possible. We were fortunate to have the Hinderlies visit with us this summer to share information and photos of the people and communities they serve. For more information and a picture diary of their mission please visit the Hinderlies' website.
